Types of Eye Injections

Eye injections are a common procedure used to treat various eye conditions. They involve administering medication directly into different parts of the eye. Here are the most common types of eye injections:

Topical Injections

  • Subconjunctival: A small amount of medication is injected into the space between the conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye) and the sclera (the white part of the eye).

Intraocular Injections

  • Intravitreal: Medication is injected directly into the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the back of the eye. This is a common method for treating conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Subretinal: Medication is injected beneath the retina to treat specific retinal diseases.
  • Sub-Tenon: Medication is injected into the space between the sclera and the Tenon's capsule, a layer of tissue surrounding the eye.
  • Posterior Juxta-Scleral: Medication is injected into the space between the sclera and the choroid, a layer of tissue beneath the sclera.
  • Intracameral: Medication is injected into the anterior chamber of the eye, the space between the cornea and the iris.

The type of injection used depends on the specific condition being treated and the desired location of the medication. Each type of injection has its own risks and benefits, and the decision of which type to use should be made by an experienced ophthalmologist.

Please note that eye injections are a medical procedure and should only be performed by a qualified eye care professional.
